The MBI

The Microproducts Breakthrough Institute, collaboratively managed by Oregon State University and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, is committed to the development of micro- and nano-technologies for sustainable energy, healthy environments and improved lives.

The institute houses laboratories for research and development, fabrication facilities and office space. Ideas in the micro and nano area are developed and matured from concept to commercialization. Core competencies include microchannel heat and mass transfer processes, energy systems, microreactor technologies, nanoparticle synthesis, and fabrication of microchannel components.

Capabilities and Expertisembi

OSU and PNNL are leaders in the science and engineering of micro- and nano-technologies for process intensification. To support on-going activities in this area, the MBI maintains capabilities that include:

  • Design and analysis tools to support device development.
  • Micro/nano fabrication equipment for laser machining, sputter deposition, nanoimprinting, diffusion bonding and brazing, atomic layer deposition and other relevant processes.
  • Inspection and validation tools including visible, electron, and laser scanning microscopes, CMM capability and profilometers.
  • Access to other specialized equipment for micro- nano-technology development.
